Area residents invited to hear inspirational speaker April 23

Tuesday, April 15, 2008 2:46 PM MDT

The Glacier County Mental Health Advisory Board is sponsoring a very special event on Wednesday, April 23. Christopher Coleman, a 33-year-old medical marvel who travels around the country with an inspirational message of faith and hope, will share his story at 6 p.m. in the Cut Bank High School auditorium. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the event is free.

Ruby Bouma and Mariah Sheble assist 4-Hers Skylar Stenson and Darrin Habel as they complete activities in their 4-H project books at the Super Sunday 4-H project day held in Valier on March 30. In addition to a half dozen other workshops offered, 4-Hers had the opportunity throughout the afternoon to utilize resources from the Extension office and expertise from adult leaders and older 4-Hers, as they worked on a variety of project books. Once thought to be mentally incompetent, Coleman has defied the odds, including experts who told his mother that he would never be able to read, write or communicate effectively. Coleman, a twin, was thought to have died shortly after birth on Oct. 20, 1973. He had gone for 15 minutes without breathing and doctors believed he had suffered extensive brain damage. They also told his family he would be severely retarded and seriously crippled.

"The challenges, heartaches, trials and unfair situations that I have faced in 33 years have enhanced my life. I no longer resent my wheelchair or my physical condition," states Coleman. "I believe God is using me to bring glory to His name."

Coleman lives in Acworth, Ga., and speaks to Christian organizations, schools, workplaces and disabled groups throughout the world through "Empowered Ministries/-Empowered Inc."

To read more about Coleman's life, see his web site at www.christophercoleman.net.

Advisory board members believe Coleman's story will inspire those who hear it to overcome the challenges and obstacles they are facing.
